A Trick to Forgetting: A Visual Novel for the Day of the Dead

My goal is to develop a visual novel using Light.vn by Soul Engine Project and publish the game on Dia de los Muertos (also known as the Day of the Dead). This project was initially planned to be submitted for the Spooktober 6th Annual Visual Novel Jam, but with less than two weeks to work on the game (I only discovered the jam halfway through), I already knew I won't be able to make it. I look forward to next year's, though. Now that I know better how to make Visual Novels and more comfortable with using VN engines (e.g. Renpy and Light.vn), I think I have a better chance next year to submit a proper, working visual novel game.

Anyway...

A Trick to Forgetting is a story of remembering the dead. It is a detective game where the player follows two friends: Arturo and Ricah. This game was inspired from my favourite Pixar movie. Guess what it is!

The setting will be mostly based on the Mexican culture of celebrating Dia de los Muertos, but the art style will be based on Japanese anime. Here are the main protagonists of the game:

Your eyes are not tricking you. The image is glitching. This is the first draft I drew for the game banner. It will most likely be replaced. I added the glitch effect to give the players a sense of "There's something wrong". Because, yes, this is a mystery novel. A light-hearted one, but still mysterious.

And since this is a mystery game, I would like to withhold more information for now.

I will go back to my little corner to draw more, write more, learn Japanese (to read Light.vn's manual), learn Spanish (to integrate into my script writing) and to remember those who have departed from this realm so I may pour my soul into creating this game as tribute to their lives and what they could have been.

I too have an unfinished project so I can relate (you might've saw my comment on your spooktober jam post)

hope your project flourishes

on a side note, how's the light.vn engine? and how would you compare it to ren'py?

Thank you! I’m new to developing Visual Novels but I love playing them, so even if this is a project I couldn’t submit for the game jam, I am looking forward to seeing it through because it’ll be my first :)

I hope you continue your project especially if it’s a project you really enjoy making.

As for Light.vn and Ren.py, I found Ren.py easier to develop with (but I also know Python so when I say “easy” it’s because I understand the code)

Light.vn on the other hand has some form of GUI (on the left sidebar) that makes development faster if you don’t want to write complex code and just want to add and position sprites. Although, it does require you learning their scripting language if you want to really make use of the features.

Another caveat with Light.vn is the lack of English support (which they are currently expanding). There’s a YouTube playlist I am using to learn but it’s in Japanese. My Japanese is まぁまぁ so I can understand him a bit.

But Light.vn has amazing features and if I intend to continue making VNs, I think investing on Light.vn would be worth it :)
